Whatmore emerges as frontrunner to succeed Chappell

New Delhi: Another Australian - Dav Whatmore - has emerged among the frontrunners to succeed Greg Chappell as coach of India, one of the hottest and toughest jobs in cricket. "I'm definitely interested," Whatmore told Thursday's Times of India.

The storm surrounding Chappell's snap resignation did not seem to have put off the current coach of Bangladesh who beat India in their World Cup opener. "I'm very familiar with the way of life in the subcontinent," Whatmore said. "My parents and grandparents were Sri Lankan. My Asian roots and Western upbringing give me a nice blend. So I really do enjoy working in the subcontinent.

"I just love the heat and humidity. I don't mind working with young players who don't speak English. I'm comfortable with senior players too." India media have reported a spectacular falling out between
Greg Chappell and India's senior players whom he is reported to have described as a "mafia".

Chappell, the former Australian captain, sent an e-mail to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday saying he did not want to seek an extension due to "family and personal" reasons. Senior pro Sachin Tendulkar responded to media reports that Chappell had blamed the unhelpful attitude of seniors for the disastrous World Cup campaign.

West Indian legend Vivian Richards has already offered to help India's cricketers in the aftermath of the World Cup and is a media favourite here. News reports have also put Sri Lanka's quiet man Tom Moody at the top of the list of candidates alongside Indian stalwarts Sunil Gavaskar and Mohinder Amarnath.

India must find Chappell's replacement quickly since they are due to tour Bangladesh in May for two Tests and three one-day internationals. India, one of the pre-tournament favourites, were upset by Bangladesh in the first match and also lost to Sri Lanka to record their worst World Cup performance since 1979.

Virender Sehwag hit a breezy 114 off 87 deliveries as India easily beat Bermuda in a crucial Group B match at the World Cup in Port of Spain on Monday.

Chasing a World Cup record total of 413, Bermuda were all out for 156 in 43.1 overs, handing India a 257-run victory, also a World Cup record.

India' margin of victory could have been larger had David Hemp not scored a stubborn 76 not out.

Cricket in India

i was reading that in MSN india and i was thinking it would be interesting for you to read how it all started so here it is :

Indian players won their do or die match against Bermuda in the backdrop of their homes attacked and their effigies burnt on the streets. These are symptoms of a long tradition of Indian cricket fans who often behave like fanatics.

When Ajit Wadekar's boys arrived after their triumph against in the West Indies in 1971 huge crowds greeted them. Their motorcade from the airport took three hours to reach Brabourne Stadium in Indore. Three years later India, again led by Wadekar, sank to one of their worst defeats, all out for 49 against England. Irate mobs attacked Ajit Wadekar's flat in Prabhadevi and threw stones.

Kingston (Jamaica), March 12: The World Cup opens to a potentially explosive clash when Pakistan take on the West Indies in a Group D match at the Sabina Park on Tuesday.

Both teams have their respective advantages and are likely to go full throttle in an attempt to get a headstart in the tournament. Going by form, the match will also decide the group topper, prompting Brian Lara and Inzamam-ul Haq to push hard for that extra mile.

While the West Indies have the home advantage, Pakistan have spinners who could turn the game should the Sabina strip keep to its changed behaviour of late. Pakistan will draw strength from the talk that pitches in the Caribbean have turned slow, suiting teams from the subcontinent.

Love them…Hate them: But you just can’t ignore them!

That’s the predicament most Indian face, when it comes to their cricket team. Being an Indian, you simply can’t stay away from cricket; it’s like an octopus and you are bound to get entangled in its tentacles.
